hilton cancun poolsThe Hilton Cancun ($99 – $193) has 426 rooms and suites, each with panoramic ocean views, terrace or balcony, air conditioning, mini-bar, satellite TV with movie channels, 2 direct dial phones, data port for computer, voice message service, in room safe, room service, and alarm clock. Near the southern end of the island, the Hilton Cancun is one of the closest resorts to the Cancun airport. The bus stops out front every 5 minutes to take you anyplace you care to go on the strip for fiddy cents.

If you’re looking for something between a business travelers’ no frills accommodations and a family themed amusement resort, this should fit the bill. With comfortable beds, a heated infinity pool, authentic Mexican food, a great golf course, quiet nights, and socializing at the bar to laid back music, you’ll find things much more sedate than most of the Cancun resorts. It only a 10 minute bus ride north for those wanting some world class Cancun nightclubs, or a couple hours south to the bohemian, expat, art community of Playa del Carmen, and the Mayan ruins at Tulum and Chichen Itza.

The hotel has some of the best beachfront property in Cancun. The hotel’s beach is among the biggest in Cancun, and certainly the least crowded. It’s position at the southern end of the Hotel Zone also means you’re likely to be first out of the cheaper collective vans that run from the airport (and first off bus tours to nearby sites). Golf carts shuttle you anywhere on the property. Although the resort is large, the layout is designed in a way that it never feels overly crowded. The grounds of the Hilton resort provide more open area and green space than any other property in the hotel zone, and the beach is the largest in Cancun.

Upgrade to a romantic beach villa with 2 queen beds. A balcony opens to the Caribbean Sea. It’s private, very quiet, and perfect for sleeping to the sound of surf. The beds are soft and comfortable, and the Hilton’s complementary moisturizers and soaps are favorite “take home” items. The junior suites (just below the presidential suites) have 2 rooms, and an outdoor terrace bigger than many hotel rooms, with table, 2 chairs, 2 sun loungers, and their own jacuzzi. It’s a romantic way to end the day, stargazing while chillin’ in a warm jetted tub. The room safes are big enough for you money, passports, laptop, and camera. The internet is NOT free.

hilton cancunSoak up the sun around the seven Hilton Cancun pools and swim-up bars. Six different pools with a series of paths, bridges and jacuzzis cascade into the large, heated Infinity pool where you will always find plenty of lounge chairs. $75 rents a shaded pool sofa for the day. The pool is perfect for children as there are many shallow areas. Pamper yourself at the full-service fitness center that offers aerobics classes, weight room, sauna, and massage.

The beach is tranquil and secure (security is ever present). Pull a lounge chair right up to the waterline, place your free towel on it, lie down, and not be bothered by anyone for hours. Totally serene even at night, the beach is quiet – not a party scene like many Cancun hotels. The hotel’s sports facilities include two lighted tennis courts and a water-sports center for ocean activities, such as sailing, windsurfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, water-skiing, para-sailing, and deep-sea fishing. Play round the championship par 72 golf course.

Take advantage of the Hilton Cancun concierge, tour desk, car rental, beauty salon, baby-sitting, and laundry service. Youngsters may get bored hanging around the pool all the time. The “playground” for children is indoors and has TV and games, but probably doesn’t compare to other resort’s “kids’ clubs”. There is no entertainment staff, arranged nightly activities, or disco.

Bottled water is very expensive in all Cancun resorts – buy it from local stores instead. Many guests comment on the high price of the restaurants. Dinner at the Mitachi restaurant will run $140 USD for 2 entrees, 2 kids meals and 2 glasses of wine. Lunch is 20 bucks for 3 Tacos. If you order an entrée from the main menu, a kids meal is free.

A smoothie bar helps you get going each morning. The large breakfast buffet is considered by many as the resort’s best fare (you may want to choose the breakfast-included package). A “free” breakfast option appears to be at the discretion of the desk at check-in. Make sure you get this option at the time of booking. The “free” breakfast buffet has omelets made to order, smoked salmon, fresh fruit, a wide variety of baked goods, French toast, pancakes, cereal, and assorted Mexican breakfast items such as chilaquiles, tamales, soup, refritos, and much more. There are no alternative restaurants within walking distance. It’s 25 minutes by bus to less expensive dining in town. The concierge is able to provide great dinner recommendations off-site. There are no soda machines. A can of Coke at the pool bar costs $4 US.

Meet new friends over cocktails at Hilton’s 2 lounges, then dine at any of the 5 on site restaurants. Spices, the main restaurant, has hearty morning and evening buffets. Pizza and Pasta is … uh, Italian cuisine with your favorite pasta and brick-oven pizzas. At Kiosko Mexican grill by the pools get the usual burgers, tacos, etc, as well as Greek salad, civiche, chicken pesto sandwiches, a tasty green cactus (nopales) juice, and more. Hoyo (hole) 19 snacks on the golf course with sandwiches, salads and tall drinks. Mitachi Seaside Grill offers private romantic tables on the beach where you can watch hatching sea turtles digging themselves out the the sand, while dining on snapper, grouper, and 5 course lobster dinners. Sorry, no turtle soup on the menu.

The Hilton Cancun is a 10 minute walk from “El Rey” the largest Mayan ruins in Cancun. The fitness center has all the latest equipment, and the 1 mile running track circles the entire complex. A convention center that can accommodate large and small groups. The finest 18 hole Cancun golf course is right outside your door.
