I escaped the winter slush and foundering factories of the Midwest for the sugar sand and tangy Margaritas of Mexico.
I first became acquainted with Cancun and the Riviera Maya while working on cruise ships out of Miami. We would anchor off (there’s a dock now) Cozumel for the “Pub Crawl” then take the ferry to the mainland next day and tour Xel Ha, Tulum, and Chichen Itza.
Having lived and worked in Las Vegas I thought I knew how to party, but the 24-7, 10 months at a stretch Love Boat madness turned out to be the hardest job I ever had. Damn, my back still hurts!
Jumping ship, I considered settling down in beautiful Playa del Carmen with the European experts, artists and old hippies. But, the Yucatan jungles had little appeal for me with the mosquitoes, heat, and humidity. So, I headed off and up the mountain to just the right altitude (about 78F year-round)…and it’s quiet. In the words of an old Smokey Robinson tune, “I like it like that!”
